Accessibility

Accessible Games exists because games should be for absolutely everyone, and this website should be too. I'm a screen reader user myself, and I use this site with NVDA every time I publish.

Our goal

This site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, and to go further where it's practical.

What's built in

  • Readable text. The Atkinson Hyperlegible font, designed for low-vision readers, at a comfortable size. All text has a contrast ratio of at least 7:1, which meets the stricter Level AAA.
  • Light and dark modes. The site follows your device's setting. You can also switch with the Dark mode button at the top of every page, and the site remembers your choice.
  • Keyboard access. Everything works from the keyboard, with a clearly visible focus outline and a "Skip to main content" link.
  • Clear structure. Every page has one main heading and an ordered outline of sections. Long posts and pages begin with an "On this page" list of their sections.
  • Collapsible lists. Long lists, like Free Downloads and the post archive, are grouped into sections you can open one at a time. They follow the W3C accordion pattern, so screen readers announce each section as collapsed or expanded.
  • Videos load only when you ask. Each video is a single "Play video" button until you press it, so pages stay quick and easy to move through, and nothing loads from YouTube until you choose to play.
  • Downloads say what they are. Every download link names the file type and size.
  • Works without JavaScript. Scripts only add conveniences, like the Dark mode button and collapsible sections. Without them, everything is still there.
  • Respects your settings, including reduced motion and Windows high contrast mode.

How we test

  • Screen reader testing with NVDA in Firefox and Chrome
  • Keyboard-only testing
  • Automated checks with axe-core on every page type
  • A contrast check of every color pairing, in both light and dark modes

Known limitations

This blog goes back to 2010, and some older material doesn't meet today's standards yet:

  • Older images: some images in older posts still need descriptions (alt text). We're working through them.
  • Older downloads: some downloadable files, especially older PDFs and spreadsheets, were made before we knew what we know now and may not work well with assistive technology. If you need one in another format, ask us and we'll do our best to provide it.
  • Other websites: links to stores and video players (DriveThruRPG, itch.io, YouTube) take you to sites we don't control.

Found a barrier?
